Your Paving care sheet

"Asphalt takes time to cure, close to 2 years. The first 14 DAYS are crucial. The first 14 days of your new driveway is the most critical period when the driveway is most vulnerable".

Glenn Bowbly

"Do not drive on your new driveway for 5-7 days. Wait 5-7 days before parking on your new driveway. When you do, only park on it during the cool part of the day".

"The next 100 days are crucial. If you recently repaved, repaired, or applied a fresh layer of "sealcoat" to your asphalt pavement, you may already notice unsightly tire scuff marks. Not to worry, though, because scuffing is a fairly common problem that occurs on most asphalt at one point or another.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you carry warranty?

Yes, we carry a One year warranty on all our paving projects.

We don’t cut corners and always ensure paving standards are met or exceeded.

What does the warranty cover?

The warranty covers against heaves due to rocks protruding through asphalt, and any dips causing puddling in excess of 1/8 of an inch. Any cracks due to the separation of asphalt excluding the driveway edges due to cars, and oil trucks driving over edges. Covers weeds growing through asphalt excluding the driveway edges where the grass meets the asphalt.

The warranty does not cover pitted asphalt resulting from owners turning tires on asphalt at a standstill. (way to avoid this is to make sure the car is rolling before turning the tires especially on hot days).

How long should I stay off my new driveway?

You may walk on your new driveway almost immediately after we finish, but you should refrain from vehicle traffic for 3-4 days after and even longer in hot temperatures. Asphalt takes time to cure, close to 2 years. The first 14 DAYS are crucial. The first 14 days of your new driveway is the most critical period when the driveway is most vulnerable.

Do you have proper liability insurance and WCB coverage?

Having WCB coverage is important in case of accidents. Upon request, Bowbly  Paving can provide our customers with proof of insurance and WCB coverage.

Note: All reputable companies should be able to provide you with this paperwork.

How does frost in the ground damage asphalt?

We live in a climate where frost is in and out of the ground multiple times a year. Frost causes movement in the ground, which results in low and high spots and other various problems that may not have been present when installing the asphalt. Frost will cause these areas to heave, dip, and settle many times during the spring, winter, and fall cycles, or it may not occur at all for several years.

Can I salt my driveway?

Salt deteriorates the liquid tar on your asphalt and is very corrosive. Black Tar recommends using “Alaskan Ice Melter” since it is less harmful to your asphalt and is environmentally friendly.

How much maintenance does an Asphalt driveway require?

Asphalt paving requires very little maintenance in comparison to a gravel driveway.

Several  advantages are:

  • Increased Property value
  • Reduced dirt tracked into your home.
  • Easier snow removal
  • Safer, especially if you use a cane or a walker
How long does an asphalt driveway last?

Asphalt lasts from 15 to 30 years, depending on the quality of installation. Asphalt could last a lot longer depending on many variables, such as weather and extent of use.

Is it normal for stones to pop out of my asphalt surface?

Stone popping might occur at high temperatures, causing the asphalt to expand slightly. This occurrence is deemed normal. Typically, you will experience this in areas with a high stone concentration (specifically if your driveway is freshly paved and under direct sunlight).

Can my driveway be resurfaced?

The type of paving required is determined by the condition of the existing surface and the foundation of the pavement area. If there are visible cracks, depressions, heaving and or foundation issues with the pavement area, then it is strongly recommended that you replace the entire area.

Resurfacing your existing pavement is determined by the condition of the sub-base, if it is in fair condition and there are no visible cracks or depressions then resurfacing is all that is usually required.

Should I seal my driveway?

Sealer will help repel harmful elements, maintain the integrity of the asphalt and prolong the life of your driveway. Sealers should only be applied to driveways older than one year.

What are the repercussions of having a tree next to my asphalt?

Tree roots may be harmful to asphalt, causing heaving and cracking. Once asphalt is peeled, it is recommended to remove any tree roots before applying new asphalt. Black Tar Corp. will not be responsible for the health of your trees if tree-root cutting is required to pave. Any tree roots located within 8” in-depth, from the surface should be excavated and disposed of.

Tree-root cutting is an additional charge. Please consult your project estimator for an accurate quote. Damage caused to your driveway from tree roots will not be covered under warranty.
